Secret Sky (2017/18)
Catie Newell
Barn donated by Michael Schoenhals
Reworking the iconic structure of the existing barn, Secret Sky allows the sky to enter and permeate the building. By day, the visitor sees the patterning and intricacy of the barn walls, juxtaposed with the massive cut that lets the daylight pour through. At night the light flows from within (for several hours beginning at dusk), acting as a large-scale lantern in the landscape and casting long shadows across its surrounds, giving light and dark back to the sky.
Catie Newell is the founding principal of the art and architecture practice *Alibi Studio and Director of the Master of Science in Material Systems and Digital Technologies at the University of Michigan. Her creative practice has been widely recognized for reworking existing space using material aggregations and the effects of light and darkness. Newell’s work explores design construction and materiality in relationship to location and geography, and cultural contingencies. She is a Lucas Fellow, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a Kresge Arts Fellow. Catie was also recently recognized as one of the top 125 female architects of all time by Princeton Press.
